Just in time for a new season of The Block (and the subsequent renovation fever that will sweep the nation), a new survey from www.elitesingles.co.nz has revealed the home decor details that Kiwis find attractive – and the things that really, really put them off!
- 68 per cent of Kiwis would consider dumping someone over their unwelcoming home
- 38 per cent think it’s possible to be attracted to someone just because of their decor
- Big kitchens and clean toilets are most appealing parts of a household
In a surprising revelation, 68 per cent of the 400 New Zealanders polled in the survey revealed that they would consider breaking up with someone if their house wasn’t up to muster. Additionally, 38 per cent of Kiwis would find themselves attracted to someone simply because of their stylish home.
How you style your house is important. But where should you focus your energy if you want to really impress? These are the top five things that make a house an attractive home, as chosen by Kiwi singles:
1. A clean bathroom: 72 per cent of Kiwis would rather date someone too neat rather than too messy and, of all the rooms in house, the bathroom is most important. 40 per cent of Kiwis scrub the loo before a date!
2. A big kitchen: 38 per cent of NZ singles would find themselves extra attracted to someone whose home included a big, well-equipped kitchen.
3. A pet: It would seem Kiwis really like animals. 33 per cent of those surveyed admitted that someone can boost their attraction factor by revealing that they own a pet.
4. Art and photos: Another decorating do is to fill your home with personal, creative touches. 30 per cent of those in the survey would find themselves enamoured by a home full of family photos and well chosen art.
5. Lots of books: In a previous EliteSingles survey, 90 per cent of Kiwis said that they identify as avid readers. Perhaps this is why 25 per cent of New Zealanders are attracted to those who have books everywhere!
Of course, where there’s good there’s also bad, and the survey also uncovered the biggest home decor don’ts; those decorating choices and stylistic quirks that might your date run for the hills:
Women’s biggest decor don’t: An empty apartment, especially one with just a futon.Kiwi women really don’t like coming home to a bare house, especially one with ‘’no furniture, just a mattress.’’ In fact, 62 per cent of women would be horrified to discover that their date’s tastes tended to the (extremely) minimal, meaning that less-is-more men who want to impress the ladies need to get shopping, stat.
Men’s biggest decor don’t: Teddy bears and kittens hanging in there. Kiwi men couldn’t decide on their biggest decor no-no, heaping equal scorn on stuffed animals and motivational notes alike. 26 per cent of New Zealand men would be put off their game by the presence of a teddy bear, while 25 per cent would rather not date someone whose home was full of urges to ‘be amazing!’
